Lasers designed for permanent hair reduction emit wavelengths of light that are absorbed by the pigment in the hair (melanin). If the surrounding skin is lighter than the colour of the hair, the energy of the laser is concentrated in the hair shaft, destroying it without affecting the skin or the follicle.
The key to a safe, efficient treatment is the device’s ability to consistently deliver a very narrow bandwidth that destroys the hair follicle, but does not damage the surrounding skin. While the laser emits a beam that only heats the hair shaft, heat is transmitted from the hair shaft to surrounding tissue for several milliseconds after the laser pulse. Hair goes through 3 different phases during the growth cycle:

Laser hair removal works by destroying the hair follicles, and hair needs to be in the Anagen phase for this to occur. Approximately 75% of hair is in the Anagen phase at any given time. The remaining hair follicles which are in the other two phases of the growth cycle won't be impacted by treatment. This is why it takes multiple laser hair removal sessions to achieve optimal results.

Follow-up sessions will target the hair follicles that weren't in the Anagen phase during prior treatments. Over time, laser hair removal treatments will be able to effectively destroy the vast majority of hair follicles in the treated region. People experience regrowth from those hair follicles that were never in the Anagen cycle during your treatment sessions.
